Ashes Poetry

I shall sleep the sleep of heroes
of conquerors, warriors, proud strong men
of arms, who have fought countless great battles
on behalf of others, and some against themselves.
I shall sleep the sleep of heroes.

I shall sleep; I shall not dream.
I shall sleep the deep sleep, knowing
there is no call to arms to come,
to take the fight once more as oft I have done,
tall, strong, proud, a champion.
I shall sleep, but I shall not dream,
what need have I of them?
For I have been one:
I shall sleep, I shall sleep.

I shall sleep, and awake unweary,
unafraid of future toil,
to heed a life more ordinary
but while I sleep, I shall sleep
the sleep of heroes
others still dream of
